British Gas Energy Trust Opens £1,700 Grant Scheme for Household Energy Debts

In a significant move to support financially strained households, British Gas Energy Trust has announced that its Individuals and Families Fund is now accepting applications for grants of up to £1,700 to help clear energy debts. This initiative, established in 2021, is specifically designed to assist those struggling with mounting energy bills, and notably, it is available to both British Gas customers and those with other energy suppliers.

Eligibility Criteria for the Grant Programme

To qualify for this financial assistance, applicants must reside in England, Scotland, or Wales. For prepayment meter customers, the energy debt owed must fall between £50 and £1,700. British Gas will verify account balances during the assessment process, and applications exceeding the £1,700 arrears threshold will be declined. It is crucial that applicants continue to maintain their payment arrangements while their application is under review.

Additional eligibility requirements include:

  • Not having received a grant from the British Gas Energy Trust within the past two years.
  • Having a household income below £20,328, or having a household member who is registered disabled and receives disability benefits, Carers Allowance, or has three or more children.
  • Seeking the grant to clear outstanding debt on a current energy account in the applicant's name and place of residence. Applications for closed accounts, such as those from individuals who have moved homes or changed suppliers, will not be considered.
  • Having received help from a money advice agency or used a trusted partner's self-help Benefit Calculator tool within the last six months.

Key Features of the Support Scheme

This grant programme stands out from other energy supplier support schemes due to its inclusivity. Unlike many similar initiatives, it is open to prepayment meter customers of any energy supplier, not just British Gas. This broad accessibility aims to reach a wider range of households facing energy debt challenges.

The British Gas Energy Trust emphasises its independence as a charity, stating that it cannot address complaints related to gas or electricity accounts held with British Gas. This distinction ensures that the grant process remains focused on providing financial relief without entanglement in customer service issues.

Households meeting the criteria are encouraged to apply promptly, as this scheme represents a vital opportunity to alleviate energy debt burdens during a time of economic pressure. The trust's commitment to supporting both customers and non-customers underscores a community-focused approach to tackling energy affordability issues across the UK.
