Vale of Clwyd Cancer Research Committee Seeks New Volunteers After 60 Years
The Vale of Clwyd fundraising committee, based in Ruthin, is embarking on a major recruitment drive to enlist a new army of helpers. This dedicated group has been raising crucial funds for Cancer Research UK for more than six decades, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the fight against cancer.
Six Decades of Life-Saving Fundraising
Since its establishment in 1964, the local committee has generated an impressive sum exceeding £260,000 to support Cancer Research UK's essential, life-saving research. This remarkable achievement highlights the profound impact that community-driven efforts can have in advancing medical science and improving survival rates.
Elizabeth Smart, spokesperson for the committee, emphasized the universal relevance of their mission. "Nearly one in two of us will get cancer in our lifetime, but all of us can support the research that will beat it," she stated. "That's why I'm urging people in the area to volunteer their time and join the Vale of Clwyd local committee."
Flexible Volunteering Opportunities Available
The committee welcomes individuals with varying levels of availability. "Whether you'd like to become a committed member of the committee or wish to give just a little time here and there, we will be very happy to welcome you," Smart added. She described the fundraising work as rewarding in multiple ways, offering opportunities to meet new people, acquire new skills, and contribute directly to combating over 200 types of cancer.
"Every day we see the benefits of research the charity has previously funded being realised, with new clinical trials opening and breakthroughs being reported — made possible thanks to volunteers and supporters like us," Smart noted.
Regional Support and Inspirational Impact
Nicholas Fear, Cancer Research UK's fundraising spokesperson for the region, expressed deep gratitude for the committee's longstanding dedication. "We are incredibly grateful for the dedication of the lovely members of the Vale of Clwyd local committee," he said. "Time volunteered is not ordinary time. It is time filled with passion, drive and determination."
Fear highlighted the emotional and communal aspects of volunteering, explaining that it honors lost loved ones and celebrates extra time gained through research advances. "It gives people a real sense of camaraderie in all pulling together for one reason — beating cancer," he remarked.
Urgent Call for Community Involvement
The charity hopes the committee's exemplary efforts will inspire broader participation. "We hope the committee's fantastic fundraising efforts inspire others to get involved, because our progress relies on every pound, every hour, and every person," Fear asserted. "We must go further and faster in the fight against this devastating disease, and we need the support of people in Ruthin and the surrounding area to do it."
Cancer Research UK aims to create a world where everyone can live longer, better lives free from cancer fear. The organization has been instrumental in major developments, from research leading to the HPV vaccine to contributing to about half of the world's essential cancer drugs.
