A dedicated student from the University of Chester is preparing for a monumental nocturnal challenge to support a cause deeply personal to him and his family.
A Personal Mission Under the Stars
Harry Illingworth, a final-year Learning Disability Nursing student, will embark on a night-time climb of Yr Wyddfa (Mount Snowdon) on August 1. His aim is to raise crucial funds for Myeloma UK, a charity dedicated to funding research and supporting individuals affected by myeloma, a form of blood cancer.
The motivation behind Harry's formidable undertaking hits close to home. His brother, Jack, lives with smouldering myeloma. Through his fundraising efforts, Harry hopes to directly contribute to the research that could lead to breakthroughs and to provide essential guidance and support for other patients and families navigating the disease.
Combining Passion with Purpose
An avid outdoors enthusiast and experienced hiker, Harry is channelling his love for the Welsh landscape into this meaningful endeavour. The event, organised by Global Adventure Challenges, involves a 1,085-metre ascent. Participants will light their path with torches against a backdrop of moonlight, timing their descent to witness the sunrise over Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. The challenge concludes with a well-earned breakfast in Llanberis.
Harry shared his perspective on the climb, stating: “This challenge isn’t just about the climb; it’s about hope, resilience, and making a positive impact for others.” He aims to inspire others by demonstrating that positive action can be taken even in the face of serious illness.
University Support for a Worthy Cause
Harry's commitment has drawn praise from his tutors at the University of Chester. Mike Davies, his personal academic tutor and a Registered Nurse for Learning Disability, commented: “I'm really very proud of what Harry is setting out to achieve. He has always been a hardworking student who practices with compassion, empathy and continually puts others first. I wish him the best of luck and hope he goes on to not only meet his fundraising goal but exceed it as it's for an incredibly good cause.”
The funds Harry raises will support Myeloma UK's comprehensive work, which includes:
- Funding vital research into the disease.
- Providing specialist nurses and helpline support.
- Offering reliable information and guidance to patients and their families.
