Derby Charity Secures Funding to Enhance Appliance Safety for Vulnerable Households
The Derby Food 4 Thought Alliance (DF4TA) has been awarded a significant grant of £1,335 from Electrical Safety First's Electrical Safety Fund. This financial boost is set to transform the charity's ability to safety test donated refrigeration appliances, including fridges, freezers, and fridge freezers, ensuring they can be quickly and safely rehomed with local individuals and families who are recovering from various crises.
Training Volunteers to Expand Testing Capacity
The grant will specifically fund comprehensive training for five volunteers from Jericho House Derby, equipping them to become competent appliance testers. This initiative is a strategic move to increase the capacity within DF4TA's Furniture and Electrical Project. By enhancing their testing capabilities, the charity aims to more efficiently process and redistribute essential cooling appliances to households that would otherwise struggle without them.
For many Derby residents referred to DF4TA following experiences such as homelessness, domestic abuse, hospital discharge, or other personal emergencies, access to a safe and functional fridge or freezer can be a critical factor in their recovery journey. It often marks the difference between regaining stability and facing further setbacks.
Affordable Access to Essential Appliances
With the expanded testing capacity, DF4TA will be able to provide a greater number of safety-checked fridges and freezers at very low costs, typically ranging from £20 to £30. This affordable pricing makes these vital appliances accessible to people who cannot afford them through conventional means, thereby supporting their efforts to rebuild their lives.
Expected Impact and Community Outreach
Based in Derby, the charity anticipates that this project will directly benefit approximately 100 households, which translates to around 200 individuals, through the supply of these safety-checked appliances. Additionally, DF4TA plans to disseminate practical electrical safety information through its extensive networks, which include referral partners, volunteers, supporters, and local businesses, further enhancing community awareness and safety.
Ann Mills, the Furniture and Electrical Project Coordinator at DF4TA, emphasized the importance of this funding: "A safe fridge or freezer can be the difference between a family getting back on their feet or going without the basics. This funding means we can safety-test more donated fridges, freezers and fridge freezers here in Derby."
This initiative underscores DF4TA's commitment to supporting vulnerable members of the Derby community, providing not only essential goods but also the knowledge and resources needed for a safer, more stable future.
