A heartwarming dose of festive spirit was delivered to Doncaster Royal Infirmary recently, as local sporting heroes paid a special visit to the hospital's youngest patients.
Stars Spread Smiles on the Children's Ward
On December 15, players from three of the town's top teams brought Christmas joy to the Children's Ward. The squad included figures from Doncaster Rovers FC, Doncaster Rovers Belles LFC, and Doncaster Rugby League. Among the visitors were DRFC Captain Owen Bailey, defender Jamie Sterry, and Belles defender Katie Yates.
The initiative aimed to brighten the hospital stay for children and their families during the festive season. The athletes arrived bearing a wide selection of carefully wrapped gifts, chosen to suit different age groups. The organisers ensured every child received a present, guaranteeing a festive surprise for all.
Mascots and Memorable Moments
The visit was elevated by the presence of beloved club mascots, including the hugely popular Donny Dog. The mascot played a key role in lifting spirits across the ward, posing for photos with patients, their families, and hospital staff.
Ward Manager Selina Usher shared her appreciation: "Visits like this make such a difference for our patients and their families. The players were very well received by patients, parents and staff alike — there was lots of excitement when they arrived, especially with Donny Dog in tow."
Creating Lasting Positive Memories
The players dedicated time to chatting with the children, assisting with homework, and talking to parents. Their presence helped forge a joyful atmosphere during what is often a challenging time for families spending the festive period in hospital.
Selina Usher added: "Visits like these play an important role in boosting morale for patients, families and colleagues alike, helping to create positive moments and lasting memories during a hospital stay."
The Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) Trust formally thanked the players for generously giving their time. Gratitude was also extended to the Club Doncaster Foundation for coordinating the visit and providing the gifts as part of their Pass the Parcel festive campaign.
