Young people from Cedar Hall School in Thundersley, Essex, recently enjoyed a memorable day of outdoor activity, friendship, and fishing during a special event held at Chigborough Fishery in Maldon.
Event Organization and Support
The event was organized by the Essex Masonic Trout and Salmon Fishing Charity and supported by Essex Freemasons. It welcomed pupils from the school, which supports young people with complex learning needs, many of whom are on the autistic spectrum and may also experience social and communication difficulties.
Fishing Experience
The pupils were paired with experienced volunteer anglers who guided them through the basics of fly fishing in a relaxed and supportive environment. Blessed with excellent weather throughout the day, the group enjoyed a successful afternoon beside the water, landing six trout in total, including one estimated at 2 to 3lb. All of the fish caught were taken home by the children, with the school later sharing positive feedback from families, including stories of pupils proudly serving trout for dinner at home.
Sponsorship and Volunteers
The event was jointly sponsored by McNab Lodge and Mersea Island Lodge and supported by volunteers from across Essex. Attendees praised the kindness, humor, and patience shown to the young people throughout the day.
Special Moments
Special moments included volunteers rescuing a duck trapped in a tree, while one pupil, Millie, kept spirits high throughout the day with her laughter and singing, helping create a warm and joyful atmosphere for everyone involved.
Organizer Comments
Secretary Peter Ashton thanked the volunteer team afterwards, saying: "On behalf of Essex MTSFC I would like to thank all of our volunteer casters who kindly gave up their time to make the day special for all of the participants."
Future Events
Organizers say events such as these demonstrate the positive impact community volunteering can have on young people and families, while showcasing the important role Essex Freemasons continue to play in supporting local communities through charitable initiatives. Two further events are planned later this year, including a coarse fishing day at Colemans Fishery, Witham, in July and another fly fishing event at Chigborough Fishery in October.
