An eight-year-old girl from Somerset and her gentle giant of a dog have inspired a major new fundraising drive for a vital local hospice. Last year, Adeline, from Taunton, completed a 100-mile walking challenge with her Great Dane, Olive, raising an incredible £535 for St Margaret's Hospice.
Following in Inspiring Pawprints
Now, the hospice is calling on all dog lovers across the county to follow in those inspirational footsteps—and pawprints—throughout January 2026. The 'Walk 100 Miles with Your Dog' challenge is a virtual event designed to kickstart the new year with purpose, positivity, and plenty of fresh air.
Participants are asked to commit to walking 100 miles with their canine companion over the month, while seeking sponsorship to support the patients and families who rely on St Margaret's. The hospice provides specialist, free-of-charge care for people with life-limiting illnesses, a service that costs approximately £15 million per year to run.
A Family Connection to Caring
Adeline's mother, Karla, who works as the therapy and day services lead at St Margaret's, said the challenge was the perfect outlet for her daughter's generous nature. "Adeline had wanted to do the New Year’s Day Dip, but she was too young. So, we found another way," Karla explained.
"She absolutely loved walking with Olive – even when they had to make up a few miles at the end! Adeline is always keen to help anyone, and to see the impact her fundraising has made is very special."
Their journey saw them explore beaches, forests, and parks across Somerset, creating treasured memories while making a tangible difference to their community.
How to Join the 2026 Challenge
Events manager Shauna Booker commented, "Adeline’s story captured so many hearts. She showed that anyone – whatever their age – can make a difference. This January, we’re inviting dog owners across Somerset to follow in her footsteps, enjoy time outdoors with their pets, and help us continue providing compassionate care."
Registration for the challenge is free and all entrants will receive a welcome pack by post, which includes:
- A handcrafted doggy bandana.
- A mileage tracker.
- A sponsorship form.
The hospice will also guide participants in setting up an online fundraising page to share their personal challenge story and gather support from friends and family.
This initiative transforms the daily dog walk into a powerful act of community support. By taking part, residents can ensure St Margaret's Hospice can continue to offer comfort and essential care to families across Somerset when they need it most.
