A charity shop in the West Midlands has been crowned the nation's absolute favourite, beating thousands of competitors to claim a prestigious national title.
A Public Vote of Confidence
The Marie Curie shop on Knowle High Street triumphed at the annual awards organised by the Charity Retail Association. The crucial factor in this victory was a massive public vote, with more than 40,000 people participating to support their preferred stores. From a field of approximately 5,000 charity shops across the country, the Knowle branch emerged as the clear winner.
The award was formally presented by Robin Osterley OBE, chief executive of the Charity Retail Association, on Thursday, December 18. The shop secured the top spot in both the West Midlands regional poll and the overall UK-wide competition.
More Than Just a Shop
While its primary purpose is to sell second-hand items and raise vital funds for Marie Curie, the UK's leading end of life charity, the store's appeal runs much deeper. It has become a cherished community hub where people connect and forge friendships while supporting a worthy cause.
Shoppers consistently praise the welcoming atmosphere, the creativity of the window displays, and the helpful staff who assist them in finding hidden bargains. This community-focused ethos is powered by a dedicated team of 41 volunteers, whose efforts were central to securing this national recognition.
Recognition for Kindness and Community
Ian Frise, head of retail at Marie Curie, expressed immense pride in retail manager Rowan Saunders and the entire Knowle team. He stated that they embody the charity's core values of "kindness, compassion and being there for people when they need it most." He described the shop as sitting at the heart of the community, providing a space where people feel connected and part of something significant.
Robin Osterley added his congratulations, noting: "This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the shop's fantastic team and highlights the important role the shop plays in its local community." He hopes the awards will inspire more people to visit and support their local charity stores.
Winning such a prominent title can have a substantial impact. Previous winners have typically seen a surge in customer footfall, received more donations, and gained greater prominence within their local area.
The award-winning Marie Curie shop is located at 1650 High Street, Knowle, B93 0NA. While a visit is highly encouraged, supporters can also contribute to the charity's crucial work through online donations, especially during the Christmas period.
