Mum Embarks on Running Challenges to Support Hospital Neonatal Unit
A dedicated mother is set to run a series of major races as a heartfelt thank you to the neonatal team at Stepping Hill Hospital, who provided critical care for her son during his early days. Rachael Skeen will participate in the Brighton Marathon on April 12, the Manchester 10k in May, and Endure 24 in Leeds in July. Her efforts are aimed at raising funds for the Stockport NHS Charity Incubator/Resuscitaire Appeal, which seeks to acquire life-saving, state-of-the-art equipment to assist babies with breathing and maintaining warmth.
Inspired by Personal Experience
Rachael's son, Alfie, was born prematurely and faced significant health challenges, including underdeveloped lungs and other complications. The family spent an entire month in the neonatal unit, where Alfie received round-the-clock care from a team of doctors and nurses. Today, Alfie is a healthy eleven-year-old, and Rachael was moved to action when she learned about the fundraising appeal. She decided to set personal challenges and goals to help gather vital funds for the cause.
Rachael expressed her gratitude, stating, "The incredible team of doctors and nurses provided not only exceptional care but also emotional support during some of our toughest nights. Their compassion made a world of difference, and I am forever grateful for their dedication." She added, "In honour of the amazing care we received, I am raising funds for Stockport NHS Charity to help purchase a much-needed incubator for future little fighters."
Fundraising for Advanced Equipment
The funds raised will contribute towards purchasing a new incubator, specifically the Drager Babyleo TN500, which is a state-of-the-art device also known as a resuscitaire. This equipment is designed to enhance care for poorly and premature babies by providing an optimal environment for their start in life. Notably, it is smaller than standard incubators, allowing it to function as a travel incubator. This feature facilitates easier access for both parents and the midwifery team, particularly when a baby requires transportation to a specialized unit.
Rachael emphasized the broader impact of her efforts, saying, "This is not just a personal challenge; it is an opportunity to give back to the community that supported us when we needed it most.
