An inspirational youngster from Nuneaton is calling on people to help feed hungry children across the world, this Volunteers’ Week. In the last two years, 13-year-old Michael Glover has raised an incredible £12,831.49 for the charity, Mary’s Meals. They provide daily school meals to more than three million children in some of the world's poorest communities in 16 countries, including Haiti, Mozambique and Yemen.
Michael first was inspired after watching a moving film about the charity's global impact. His heroic fundraising efforts range from local bake sales to a gruelling 100km walking challenge. The schoolboy now volunteers directly for the organisation and hopes his journey will encourage others to join the cause.
Michael says: “Volunteering for Mary’s Meals makes me feel really happy because I know I’m helping children around the world who are much more in need than many people realise. Knowing that even small things I do can make a real difference means a lot to me. The biggest benefit for me is knowing that I’ve helped children not only in the present, but also in their future. Education gives children hope and opportunities, and it can change the lives of the generations that come after them too.”
There are many different ways to support Mary’s Meals, including public speaking, organising events or helping with general admin. Volunteers will be directly supporting children like 15-year-old Bridget from Malawi, whose family struggle with food insecurity due to unpredictable weather patterns. Before the charity stepped in, Bridget would often arrive at school too hungry and exhausted to learn. She now receives a daily mug of vitamin-enriched porridge at school which gives her the vital strength to learn and play.
Bridget says: “When I eat porridge, it brightens my day because I am full and energetic, and I feel happy. Porridge has made a difference because my mother doesn’t get stressed to look for breakfast. She knows I will find the meal here at school.”
Hannah Moore, from the charity, says: “We are incredibly grateful to all our inspirational volunteers like Michael, who make the work of Mary’s Meals possible. They are the heart and soul of everything we do. Volunteering for Mary’s Meals helps us not only reach hungry children across the world but helps grow local community relationships and offers great personal benefits. You can meet new people and learn new skills while making a positive impact on the lives of young people in need. It’s a win-win!”
