A police carrier packed with festive goodwill made a special delivery to Huyton Dog's Trust this week, ensuring rescue dogs will enjoy a warmer and happier Christmas.
A Force-Wide Effort for Furry Friends
The vehicle was loaded with generous donations from officers and staff across Merseyside Police. The haul included essential and comforting items such as cosy beds, warm blankets, plentiful dog food, and special turkey treats.
This marks the second consecutive year that Knowsley Local Policing Inspector, Andy Robinson, has organised the collection drive for his local shelter. The initiative follows his significant personal charity milestone, having raised £20,000 for good causes in November.
Inspired by a Lasting Legacy
Inspector Robinson began his fundraising journey in 2012 alongside his pet huskies, Thor and Loki. His commitment to helping the community he serves has only deepened following the death of Thor from cancer in 2024, and with Loki now too frail to continue their charity walks.
"It matters so much to me that what I started with my boys keeps going, even when they can’t anymore," said Inspector Robinson. "The support from colleagues for Thor and Loki’s Christmas Wish is heartwarming."
He described how donation points at police stations were overwhelmed. "You think people might bring in the odd tin of dog food to donate – but the donation points just overflowed. They actually became a bit of a trip hazard!"
Comfort for Dogs and Owners Alike
Having served as a Local Policing Inspector in Knowsley for three years, Robinson feels a strong sense of responsibility for the area's overall welfare. He expressed empathy for those forced to make the difficult decision to give up their pets.
"People have to give up their dogs for all sorts of reasons – and I can imagine for so many people that’s a truly heartbreaking decision to make," he said. "I hope seeing these donations will give those people a little bit of comfort, knowing the dogs will at least have a happy Christmas."
He praised the vital work of The Dog's Trust and expressed gratitude for being able to support it, adding, "I’m grateful to be able to play a small part, in the name of my own boys, in supporting it."
