Andy Merriman, 46, a dedicated postman from Longlevens, and his 15-year-old son Lewis are preparing for a gruelling 86-mile cycle challenge this weekend. The pair will tackle every major hill in the Malverns before cycling around Worcester, all while wearing fancy dress: Andy as Wonder Woman and Lewis as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.
Fundraising for Sue Ryder
The challenge aims to raise vital funds for Sue Ryder, a healthcare charity that provides expert palliative care in hospices and at home, along with bereavement support for families. The money raised will help the charity continue its compassionate care.
Personal Inspiration
Andy’s father, who passed away from terminal cancer on September 5, 2025, spent his final days at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice. Andy said: “Dad was a stubborn man, and he hated being in the hospital. During his short time at the hospice, he was a different man. He was happy, he would smile, and he enjoyed talking to the nurses. They cared for him like he was a member of their own family. It was just amazing. The support Sue Ryder provided Dad, and us as a family, was just what we needed at that moment and we were so grateful.”
Second of Three Challenges
This weekend’s ride is the second of three major fundraising feats the father-son duo have planned. Their first challenge was a three-day journey cycling over 60 miles a day from Longlevens to Woolacombe, a coastal spot his parents dearly loved. Andy expressed immense pride in his son’s dedication: “The challenges have been such a fantastic life-changing experience and a great way to spend some father and son time together. Lewis is phenomenal and has been up for everything I have suggested. Before we cycled to Woolacombe, he’d only ever ridden 16 miles to Tewkesbury and back.”
Final Challenge in September
In September, to mark the first anniversary of his father’s death, Andy will take on a third solo challenge: cycling a traditional two-gear bike with a shopping basket, mainly uphill to Bourton-on-the-Water and back. Andy added: “The death of someone you love is horrible, but to be in a place where the staff feel like family and the place feels like home, I don't think you could have a better death than that.”
