A Retford man is preparing to embark on a heartfelt 10-mile sponsored walk to give back to the hospital team he credits with saving his life.
A Personal Mission of Gratitude
Liam Butterfield, a local resident, will tackle the challenge along the Chesterfield Canal from Worksop to Retford on November 15, 2025. His motivation stems from a deeply personal experience with the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospital’s Clinical Research team. After taking part in a kidney research study, clinicians identified serious underlying health issues that required urgent monitoring and treatment.
Thanks to their swift intervention, the progression of Liam's kidney condition has slowed dramatically, giving him renewed hope for the future. Driven by immense gratitude, he is now determined to raise vital funds through the DBTH Charity.
Funding for Life-Saving Equipment
The money raised from Liam's walk will be used to purchase specialised heart equipment for the research team. This crucial technology will help detect heart defects or heart disease in patients with chronic illness and related conditions across Doncaster, Bassetlaw, and the surrounding areas.
Liam explained his powerful motivation: "The team at the Clinical Research Hub have saved my life. Because of this, I want to give something back. This vital equipment could change - and even save - lives. Every step I take, and every pound you give, brings us closer to helping others receive the same support and outcomes that I’ve been fortunate to experience."
Community Impact and Support
Funds raised for the DBTH Charity support investments that go above and beyond what the NHS can routinely provide. This includes enhanced medical equipment, improved patient environments, and additional support for research teams whose ground-breaking work contributes to better patient outcomes.
Adrian Petts, Head of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals Charity, commented: "We are incredibly grateful to Liam for his commitment and generosity. His experience highlights just how important clinical research is in transforming lives, and his fundraising will directly support improvements that will benefit many more patients in our care."
