Runners raise £12,700 for hospital charity at London Marathon

A team of four local runners has raised more than £12,700 for Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) Charity after completing the London Marathon. The group, the largest to ever represent the charity at the event, collected £10,727 in donations along with £2,026.19 in Gift Aid. Kieran Benson, Nicole Tucker, Lyndsey Dunworth, and Steve Forster each finished the 26.2-mile course on April 26, 2026, to support causes close to their hearts.

The money will help the charity buy specialist equipment and improve hospital environments for patients, families, and staff beyond what the NHS can fund alone. Kieran Benson, who works at the hospital, raised more than £4,000 in memory of his grandparents, who were all cared for by the Trust. He said: “The compassion and support they were shown has always stayed with me. Running the London Marathon felt like the perfect way to challenge myself while giving something back to a charity that has helped my family and friends so much.”

Lyndsey Dunworth

Nicole Tucker, a midwife at the hospital, joked that her marathon training was quite similar to her busy shifts on the maternity wards. She said: “As a midwife, I’m already used to long shifts, running up and down corridors, and catching babies. Signing up for a run might just feel like another day at work, except with slightly less screaming.” Lyndsey Dunworth chose to take on the challenge to celebrate her 50th birthday and to support the local hospital her family has used over the years. She said: “I chose to fundraise for DBTH Charity because it supports a local hospital that all of my family have used at some point, and I wanted to support local fundraising where possible. This year is my 50th birthday, and running the London Marathon felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Steve Forster

Steve Forster raised over £2,000 and spent 16 weeks training for the event to help a cause that impacts the whole community. He said: “I chose to fundraise for the charity because I really admire the work you do and the impact it has. It felt meaningful to challenge myself while also raising awareness and support for such an important cause that will inevitably affect all of us.”

Charity leader praises team

Adrian Petts, who leads the charity, said: “I am incredibly proud of Kieran, Nicole, Lyndsey, and Steve for taking on the London Marathon and raising such an amazing amount for our charity. To see our biggest-ever marathon team raise more than £12,700 is a fantastic achievement, and every pound will help us continue supporting patients, families, and colleagues across our hospitals.” Applications are now open for people who want to join the 2027 team and support the charity next year. The event took place in Doncaster, Worksop, Retford, and Tuxford in Nottinghamshire.
