Young Artist's Mascot 'Stripe' Brings Joy to Hertfordshire Hospitals

The East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals' Charity has officially launched its new mascot, named 'Stripe', a charming character designed by 10-year-old Josie from Letchworth Garden City. Josie's winning entry was selected from an impressive pool of 168 submissions in a community competition, showcasing her creative talent and attention to detail.

A Winning Design with Heart

Judges were particularly impressed by Josie's friendly and engaging creation, which cleverly incorporated the charity's logo colours and heart motifs. She described Stripe's personality as funny, kind, and cute, qualities perfectly aligned with the charity's goal of uplifting spirits in hospital settings. As part of her prize, Josie had the unique opportunity to see her design brought to life by illustrators at The Puppet Company, a Hitchin-based firm that also sponsored the mascot project.

Josie's Creative Inspiration

Upon learning of her victory, Josie expressed her excitement, saying, "I love drawing and colouring, and when I saw this competition come through the letter box, I thought I will enter it, not ever thinking I would win! I designed Stripe based on the charity's colours, and I thought Stripe had to be a fun-loving character. He must make people who are in hospital and are feeling unwell, smile." The Puppet Company further celebrated her achievement by presenting Josie and her sister with special toys as souvenirs from the memorable day.

Charity Director's Enthusiasm

Eloise Huddleston, director of the charity that supports Lister Hospital, New QEII Hospital, Hertford County Hospital, and Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, shared her enthusiasm for the new mascot. "We were all very excited to meet Stripe. He looks amazing. Josie's design is perfect. He will bring so much joy to children and adult patients alike. You can't help but smile when you see him," she remarked.

Stripe's Role in Community Engagement

Stripe is set to play a key role in raising awareness for the charity's mission, which focuses on supporting NHS teams to deliver exceptional care to patients and their families. Huddleston added, "Stripe will help us raise awareness of the work we do supporting our NHS teams to give the very best care to patients and their families. He will also help out at events and community activities, so watch out for him coming to a venue near you soon! We would like to thank The Puppet Company for their kind support in sponsoring Stripe and for the fantastic day they gave Josie and her family. It was a day I'm sure they will always remember."

This initiative highlights the power of community involvement and artistic expression in enhancing healthcare environments, with Stripe poised to become a beloved figure across Hertfordshire's medical facilities.
