St John Ambulance is calling on adults across Kent to help inspire and support the next generation of lifesavers by volunteering with its youth team. Vacancies are currently available for youth leaders and youth helpers in Sittingbourne, the Isle of Sheppey, Folkestone, Northfleet and Tunbridge Wells.
About St John Ambulance
As the nation's leading first aid and health response charity, St John Ambulance plays a vital role in communities across the country. Locally, its youth units provide young people with practical first aid skills alongside opportunities to build confidence, leadership, teamwork and resilience. With growing demand in youth programmes, several Kent-based groups are now seeking additional volunteers to help continue and expand this important work.
Volunteer Roles
Volunteers work with Badgers (aged five to 11) and Cadets (aged 10 to 17), delivering engaging weekly sessions in a safe and supportive environment. No previous experience is necessary – just enthusiasm, reliability and a willingness to make a positive difference. Full training and ongoing support are provided, including first aid and safeguarding qualifications, as well as development opportunities and benefits such as access to the Blue Light Card.
Opportunity for Youth Group Leads
There is also an opportunity for those who wish to take on more responsibility to become a youth group lead. This role involves coordinating programme delivery and ensuring the effective supervision and wellbeing of Cadets and youth volunteers.
Benefits of Volunteering
While the youth team provides young people with invaluable life skills, the benefits of volunteering are not one-sided. Youth team volunteers frequently say that they also learn a great deal – working alongside Badgers and Cadets offers fresh perspectives, new ideas and a deeper understanding of the challenges and aspirations facing young people today. Volunteers also develop their own communication, leadership and mentoring skills, while gaining confidence in guiding and supporting others. Many say the experience helps them grow personally and professionally.
Testimonial
"It's one of the most rewarding things you can do," says Nicole Gansbuhler, from St John Ambulance. "Watching young people grow in confidence, learn to save lives and support each other is truly inspiring. What's just as powerful is how much our volunteers learn from the young people - they bring energy, ideas and honesty that makes every session special. You don't need to be an expert - just someone who cares. The training and support are fantastic, and the impact you make is real."
