Two students from Whitworth Community High School have been honoured with the Mayor of Whitworth Young Achiever awards in recognition of their outstanding contributions. Alice Kowal was nominated by her Guide Leader for her remarkable achievements in Girlguiding, alongside her volunteering and singing, and for her 'wonderfully kind nature'. Harry Henshaw was nominated by headteacher Andrew Oliver for his 'outstanding leadership skills, determination and commitment', which were instrumental in the school's Youth Enterprise team raising £2,264.43 for Rossendale Hospice.
Ceremony at Whitworth Town Council
The pair were invited to a special meeting of Whitworth Town Council, where Mayor Councillor Janet Whitehead presented them with a Young Achiever certificate and plaque.
Alice Kowal's Achievements
Alice, aged 14, is the first Guide in Whitworth to receive the prestigious Girlguiding Gold Award. She also serves as a Young Leader in the Rainbows section and spent 18 months volunteering for The Lighthouse Community Foodshare. Reflecting on her role, Alice said: 'I am a Young Leader helping with Rainbows, I do all the games and sometimes help with the activities and help to set up.' She noted that becoming a Young Leader has boosted her confidence. Last year, she won a North West Girlguiding singing competition and spent time over Easter in London at the Brit School, where she met young people from around the world, including Bulgaria and Switzerland, and performed a mini concert. Alice has been accepted into the prestigious artist development programme 'In the Making' for 14- to 18-year-olds, becoming one of its youngest participants. She will attend a week-long music residential at the University of Huddersfield in the summer, followed by online meetings throughout the year. The programme will culminate in her producing an original song that will receive radio airtime. Alice hopes to pursue a career in music.
Harry Henshaw's Leadership
Harry, also 14, explained his role in the Youth Enterprise team: 'When it came to the Youth Enterprise presentation, I helped all of the other members of the team to deliver their speeches. I was pushing the Youth Enterprise team like a rocket engine; some people needed a bit more push to get them out of their comfort zone.' He added that taking part in the programme boosted his leadership skills, though he is already a confident person. Harry aims to pursue a career in lighting, getting involved in festivals, events, and corporate projects. His mother, Vickie, previously won a Town Council award for her volunteering work at Whitworth Library.
Additional Recognition
Alice's Guide Leader, Elaine, was one of two recipients on the night to receive a Dr Alan Morris Award for 40 years of Girlguiding service.
