A 17-year-old boy is set to face a youth court after police officers seized a working firearm and ammunition on a busy West Midlands high street.
Firearm Recovered on Sunday Afternoon
The incident unfolded on Sunday, January 4, when officers from West Midlands Police acted on intelligence. The operation led to the discovery of what has been described as a 'viable' firearm on High Street in Smethwick. A quantity of ammunition was also recovered at the scene.
Arrest and Charges Follow Police Enquiries
Following swift investigations, a suspect was identified and detained. A 17-year-old boy was arrested in West Bromwich on Monday, January 5. Due to his age, he cannot be named for legal reasons.
The teenager has since been charged with multiple offences. These include possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, possession of cannabis, and an assault offence.
Court Appearance Scheduled
After being charged, the youth was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear before Wolverhampton Youth Court to answer the charges brought against him.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Police confirmed the sequence of events, stating: "We’ve charged a teenager after recovering a gun and ammunition in Smethwick. We acted on information and seized the viable firearm in High Street on Sunday. Following enquiries we detained a 17-year-old boy in West Bromwich yesterday."
