Police Appeal

Detective Constable Sarah Jones said: “This was a completely unprovoked attack on a hardworking bus driver who was simply doing his job. Racial abuse and violence will not be tolerated, and we are determined to bring the offender to justice.”

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about the suspect to come forward. They are particularly interested in speaking to passengers who were on the bus at the time.

Impact on the Driver

The driver, who has not been named, is receiving support from his employer and the police. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of public transport workers, who often face abuse and violence. In 2022, there were over 1,000 reported assaults on bus drivers in the West Midlands, according to the trade union Unite.

Unite regional officer Jane Smith said: “This attack is another example of the unacceptable behavior that bus drivers face daily. We call on the public to respect transport workers and for tougher penalties for those who assault them.”
