Armed police smashed the windows of a white BMW on the Black Country Route in Wolverhampton, recovering a loaded handgun and multiple swords linked to a brutal attack in Birmingham days earlier. Four men were arrested at the scene and have now been sentenced.
Dramatic Traffic Stop
On September 15, armed officers stopped the vehicle as it traveled into Wolverhampton along the Black Country Route near Spring Vale Island. Bodyworn footage showed officers ordering the occupants to show their hands before smashing the car's windows and pulling four men out onto the ground in handcuffs.
A loaded handgun containing 11 rounds was discovered in the footwell, along with swords and other weapons in the back of the car.
Link to Birmingham Attack
The BMW was connected to an attack that took place on Ruskin Street, Birmingham, three days earlier on September 12. A construction worker was repeatedly struck with metal poles, suffering broken legs and a broken left arm, requiring surgery. The attackers fled in a white BMW, which was the same vehicle stopped on the Black Country Route after traveling from London.
Sentences Handed Down
The four men were sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court on July 9. Gurwinder Singh, 25, of Ealing, London, admitted possession of a firearm, ammunition, and five swords and was jailed for five years and 11 months. Harpandeep Singh, 23, of Hackney, London, was jailed for seven years after being found guilty of firearm and ammunition charges and admitting possession of the swords. Harshehajdeep Singh, 21, of Ealing, London, was jailed for six years and eight months after being found guilty of possession of the firearm, ammunition, and swords. Zorawar Singh, 31, of no fixed address, was jailed for six years and two months after admitting possession of a firearm, ammunition, and five swords.
Police Statement
DC Kyle Bowering, from West Midlands Police's Major Crime Unit, said: "This investigation has led to the recovery of a loaded gun, as well as swords, which would no doubt have gone on to be used in crime to harm and threaten others. These weapons have now been taken off the streets, and those caught with them have been put behind bars for a number of years."
