Streets outside HMP Birmingham were sealed off by armed police on Tuesday, April 28, following a serious incident. Officers, including some equipped with riot shields, were deployed to Lodge Road and Bacchus Road in Winson Green during the early hours of the morning, according to local residents.
Man Spotted on Wall Near Prison
A man was observed sitting on a wall just outside the prison grounds. Witnesses described him as agitated and shouting at officers. A reporter at the scene stated, 'He is sat on a wall just outside HMP Birmingham grounds. As a result, roads have been sealed off in the vicinity and the public have been asked to step back.'
The cordon was later widened, with the public told to move back even further. A team of riot officers remained on standby in nearby Kirby Road.
Residents Report Objects Thrown
A local resident from nearby Rectory Grove claimed the man had been throwing bricks and had been present in the area since around 3am. Neighbours reported hearing shouting and swearing, which escalated over time.
West Midlands Police urged the public to avoid the area but stated there was no threat to the public. A force spokesperson said, 'We are currently on Lodge Road in Birmingham dealing with an ongoing incident. There is no threat to the public but we would urge motorists to avoid the area. Further details will be issued in due course.'
Police dog handlers were also in attendance. BirminghamLive has contacted West Midlands Ambulance Service for comment.
