West Midlands Police have confirmed that a 55-year-old man arrested following a devastating fire in Kings Norton has been released on bail with conditions. The arrest was made on suspicion of arson endangering life after a blaze tore through a row of terraced houses on Hillmeads Road.
The fire, which began in a caravan, spread rapidly to neighbouring homes at around 3.20pm on Thursday, August 13. Residents were evacuated from the area as the flames engulfed the properties. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Investigation Update and Community Support
In a statement, police said the man has been bailed while enquiries continue. The fire caused significant damage to the affected homes, leaving occupants in need of support. The local community, including Greaves Hall, stepped in to assist those displaced by the incident.
Authorities are also investigating a separate blaze that occurred on the same day in Daisy Farm park, which spread to homes on Gorleston Road in Highters Heath. That fire left half a dozen families without accommodation, with homes and contents destroyed.
Victim's Account of Devastation
Andrew Reynolds, whose mother's home was destroyed in the Highters Heath fire, described the loss. "There's nothing left. Mum's lost everything more or less, to be honest," he said. "Everything's gone, it's all gone. My mum's lost everything. All my mum's possessions, all the family things in the loft from my nan and grandad, photographs of yesteryear."
West Midlands Fire Service and police continue to investigate both incidents. The bail conditions imposed on the arrested man are part of the ongoing arson inquiry.
