Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) has announced a series of new safety measures aimed at tackling harassment on buses in Birmingham, following a number of high-profile incidents that have raised concerns among passengers and drivers alike.
Increased CCTV and Driver Training
The measures include the installation of upgraded CCTV cameras on all buses, providing clearer images and better coverage. Additionally, bus drivers will receive enhanced training to help them identify and respond to harassment situations effectively. TfWM has also committed to working closely with West Midlands Police to ensure swift action against offenders.
Passenger Reassurance
Passengers have expressed relief at the news, with many hoping that the measures will make bus travel safer, particularly for women and vulnerable groups. A spokesperson for TfWM stated: "We want everyone to feel safe when using public transport in the West Midlands. These new measures are a significant step towards achieving that goal."
The announcement comes after a campaign by local activists and politicians who highlighted the issue of harassment on public transport. The new measures are expected to be fully implemented by the end of the year.
