Birmingham Crash Chaos: Residents in Pyjamas Confront Driver After Multi-Vehicle Smash
A quiet residential street on the Birmingham-Solihull border was thrown into chaos in the early hours of Sunday morning when a car ploughed into multiple parked vehicles. The incident, which occurred on Lincoln Road North around 6.30am on February 15, left five vehicles badly damaged and residents rushing outside in their nightwear to confront the driver.
Scene of Destruction on Lincoln Road North
The driver of a white VW Tiguan was captured on CCTV footage slamming into a parked black SUV, which then shunted into a white or beige Mini with a black roof. That vehicle was subsequently pushed into a black Audi, with the chain reaction continuing as cars were forced further down the road into another vehicle. The impact was so severe that one resident described it as sounding "like the floor was coming up."
"I heard a big crash and then it smashed again and again and again," said the Audi owner, a healthcare worker who asked to remain anonymous. "I looked out of my window and my car, a black Audi, wasn't there where I'd parked it. It was in the middle of the road."
Pyjama-Clad Residents Confront Sleeping Driver
Residents were awakened by the screeching noise of metal on metal and rushed outside to find their vehicles damaged and displaced. According to witnesses, the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel after parking outside a veterinary clinic following the collisions.
"Everyone rushed outside in our pyjamas," the healthcare worker continued. "He had driven down the road on the wrong side. He drove into cars outside houses and then parked outside the vets and went to sleep. We knocked on the window of his car and he wouldn't wake up."
When police arrived with three vehicles and approximately seven officers, the driver reportedly woke up and attempted to drive away, managing to move his car only about a metre before being stopped.
Police Conduct Positive Drugs Swipe
West Midlands Police confirmed they were called to the scene following reports of a collision involving a car driving into multiple parked vehicles. The driver, a 22-year-old man, did not initially stop but was found nearby where officers conducted a drugs swipe that returned positive results.
The police spokesperson stated: "The 22-year-old man was spoken to at the scene, and enquiries are ongoing."
Residents Express Anger and Frustration
Residents expressed their frustration at the destruction caused, with one vehicle belonging to a woman who had received it as a birthday present just the day before the incident. The brand new car was reportedly among those damaged in the chain-reaction collision.
"He could have killed somebody," said the Audi owner. "I think my car is a write off and I won't get back what it was worth. One of the girl's cars, she got it the day before as a birthday present. It was brand new. We all work. We can't do anything without our cars."
The resident continued, highlighting the particular impact on the birthday recipient: "It's a real shame for the girl who had just had a birthday – it was her first car. The van belonged to a roofer."
During the confrontation, residents reportedly asked the driver: "Do you know what you have done?" as they surveyed the damage to four cars and a van, with additional wing mirror damage noted on other vehicles along the street.
Ongoing Police Investigation
West Midlands Police continue to investigate the incident, which has left multiple residents facing significant inconvenience and financial loss. The positive drugs swipe adds another dimension to what began as a routine early morning disturbance on a residential street.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of impaired driving, even in quiet residential areas where residents should reasonably expect their parked vehicles to remain safe from such destructive events.
