A 45-year-old Birmingham drug dealer has been sentenced to prison after he dumped crack cocaine and heroin valued at approximately £4,000 while attempting to flee from police officers. The incident occurred in the Sparkbrook area of the city, where officers on patrol spotted the suspect acting suspiciously.
Chase and Discovery
On the evening of 15 January 2025, plainclothes officers from West Midlands Police observed the man, later identified as David Thompson, engaging in what appeared to be a drug transaction. When they approached, Thompson immediately ran, discarding a black backpack as he fled. Officers pursued him on foot and apprehended him a short distance away.
The discarded backpack was recovered and found to contain 40 wraps of crack cocaine and 30 wraps of heroin, with a combined street value of £4,000. Forensic analysis later confirmed the drugs were of high purity.
Court Proceedings
Thompson, of no fixed address but known to operate in the Sparkbrook area, appeared at Birmingham Crown Court on 28 February 2025. He pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply Class A drugs (crack cocaine and heroin). The court heard that Thompson had a previous conviction for drug dealing in 2019, receiving a suspended sentence at that time.
Sentencing him to four years and six months in prison, Judge Sarah Matthews said: "You have shown a blatant disregard for the law and the harm these drugs cause in our community. Your attempt to flee and discard evidence only confirms your guilt. The sentence reflects the seriousness of this offence."
Police Reaction
Detective Constable Mark Roberts of West Midlands Police's Serious Organised Crime Unit commented: "This was a significant seizure of Class A drugs that would have caused immense harm to vulnerable people in Birmingham. Thompson thought he could outrun us, but our officers were determined and swift. We are pleased that he is now behind bars."
DC Roberts added that the operation was part of a wider crackdown on drug supply in the city, which has seen over 120 arrests and seizures worth more than £1.5 million in the past year.

Local community leaders welcomed the sentence. Mohammed Yasin, chair of the Sparkbrook Neighbourhood Forum, said: "Drug dealing blights our streets and preys on the vulnerable.
