Birmingham Ranks 9th in UK for Illegal Sports Streaming Searches
Birmingham in Top 10 for Illegal Sports Streaming

New research has identified Birmingham as one of the UK's leading hotspots for residents searching for ways to illegally stream live sports events.

Shocking Search Data Reveals Regional Hotspots

A study conducted by The Winners Enclosure analysed Google search data to determine the volume of queries for terms related to illicit sports streaming. The data, measured per 100,000 people to account for population size, placed Birmingham in ninth position nationally.

The research found that Birmingham residents make an average of 543.27 monthly searches per 100,000 people for methods to watch sport without paying. Other West Midlands towns also featured prominently on the list, with Walsall ranking 14th (429.88 searches) and Wolverhampton 19th (398.18 searches).

Norwich topped the national list as the number one hotspot, with a staggering 1,334 searches per 100,000 residents each month.

Severe Legal Consequences for Streamers

The pursuit of free streams carries significant risks beyond just poor video quality or pop-up ads. Individuals caught streaming content illegally face the very real threat of substantial fines running into thousands of pounds and even a criminal conviction that could lead to a prison sentence.

A spokesperson for The Winners Enclosure issued a stark warning: "Our study reveals the shocking number of people who look to find streams for sport illegally. It’s important to remember that if you are ever caught watching sport on a laptop, phone, or with a jailbroken Fire TV Stick, you are liable to be prosecuted."

The spokesperson emphasised that offenders could end up behind bars for up to 12 months or be hit with a hefty financial penalty.

Crackdown on Piracy and Security Risks

Authorities are actively targeting digital piracy. The Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) has confirmed it is focusing on UK regions where data indicates high levels of illegal streaming activity.

The spokesperson added a further caution about the dangers of using unofficial streams: "Watching streams leaves you open to security and virus issues on your devices." These sites often contain malicious software that can compromise personal data and financial information.

This new data serves as a direct warning to viewers across the Midlands, with Birmingham residents highlighted as being particularly at risk of detection and prosecution. Popular search terms analysed in the study included phrases like 'football stream', 'free boxing stream', and 'horse racing stream free'.
