A Birmingham man has been ordered to pay £141 after stealing a Greggs sandwich and two bags of cookies valued at just £4.60. Carl Brennan, 42, of Preston Road, Soho, was caught shoplifting at the Greggs outlet on June 16 despite staff issuing him a warning earlier that afternoon.

According to prosecutors, staff at the store became suspicious of Brennan and issued a formal warning that shoplifters would not be tolerated. However, Brennan ignored the warning and proceeded to take the items. The court heard that he also “encouraged two other males to enter and steal items” before leaving without payment.
Prosecuting, Ms Begum told Birmingham Magistrates’ Court: “Staff became suspicious and issued a warning that shoplifters would not be tolerated.”
Court Proceedings and Penalty
Brennan pleaded guilty to theft and was fined £40. He was also ordered to pay £85 in prosecution costs and a £16 victim surcharge, bringing the total to £141. The stolen goods were recovered and returned to the store.
At the time of the offence, Brennan had 21 previous convictions for a total of 40 offences. His defence lawyer stated that there was “little to no planning involved in taking the items,” suggesting the theft was opportunistic rather than premeditated.
