New crime data has revealed the most dangerous parts of Birmingham, with Lozells and East Handsworth recording the highest number of violent and sexual offences in the city over the 12 months to July.
The policing area of Lozells and East Handsworth saw 2,420 such crimes, the most of any neighbourhood in Birmingham, according to analysis of West Midlands Police data. Aston followed closely with 2,381 offences, and South Yardley was the only other area to exceed 2,000, with 2,051 recorded.
Thousands of crimes were reported to police during that period, and the figures cover all categories of serious offending, including murders, stabbings, robberies, fights, domestic abuse and sex attacks.
Crime hotspots across the city
Stockland Green recorded 1,996 violent and sexual offences, with Bordesley Green at 1,919 and Acocks Green at 1,903. Sparkbrook saw 1,865, while Shard End recorded 1,756.
Other high-crime areas include Smith's Wood with 1,561, Small Heath and Highgate at 1,534, Stechford and Yardley North with 1,532, and Erdington at 1,525. Kingstanding recorded 1,507, Tyburn 1,492, and both Ladywood and Longbridge each saw 1,477 offences.
The data shows that crime is not evenly distributed across Birmingham. While the city has a reputation as a high-crime area, there are neighbourhoods where offending is comparatively low.
Lowest crime areas in Birmingham
Sutton Four Oaks recorded the fewest violent and sexual offences with just 400, followed by Sutton Vesey at 524 and Sutton New Hall with 503. The Jewellery Quarter saw 606 offences, while Chelmsley Wood recorded 816.
Nechells had 796 violent and sexual offences, and Brandwood recorded 985. Bournville saw 987 offences, with Oscott at 981 and Quinton at 950.
Other areas with lower figures include Hall Green at 905, Sutton Trinity with 977, and Selly Oak at 1,129.
Lozells and Aston remain crime capitals
Lozells, East Handsworth and Aston are consistently the areas where most serious offending happens in Birmingham, according to the analysis. These streets have been the scene of violent gang turf wars in recent times, involving shootings and stabbings.
Two people were stabbed in Lozells just last month, highlighting the ongoing issue. The full list of violent and sexual offences for the 12 months to July shows the scale of the problem across the city.
Residents in these areas are most likely to be victims of crime, according to the data, which covers all serious offences reported to West Midlands Police during that period.
