Burglar Sentenced to Prison for Home Invasion and Assault

A man has been locked up after a woman arrived at her Staffordshire home to discover him sticking his head through her downstairs window. Neil Archie Chris McGilligan, aged 37, committed the offences on August 24 last year, leading to a custodial sentence of two years and two months.

Details of the Incident

The victim returned to her home in Stoke-on-Trent to find that her laptop, phone charger, and all of her trainers were missing. Upon investigating, she spotted McGilligan poking his head into a window of her property. In a shocking turn of events, McGilligan threw an item at the woman, causing her serious injuries. He then proceeded to throw a cat bowl at another window, smashing it before fleeing the scene.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

McGilligan, from Newcastle-under-Lyme, admitted to multiple charges, including burglary dwelling, theft, and criminal damage to property valued under £5,000. He appeared at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on March 5, where he was sentenced. Despite initially answering 'no comment' to all questions in custody, he later confessed to the offences in court.

Police Response and Community Impact

PC Katie Ratcliffe of the Stoke-on-Trent north local policing team commented on the case, stating, 'McGilligan showed no regard for the victim, her home, or her belongings. I am glad McGilligan received a custodial sentence for his offending, and hope this shows our commitment to protecting victims of domestic violence across Staffordshire.' A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police added that the investigation led to McGilligan's arrest and subsequent conviction, highlighting the force's dedication to tackling such crimes in the region.
