An 'alarming' incident at a Midlands primary school saw a child bring a kitchen knife onto the premises. Sandon Primary Academy in Meir, Staffordshire, confirmed that the knife was discovered in a pupil's bag on Friday, May 1. Police were called to the school, but the situation was managed without requiring a lockdown.
School reassures parents
The school acknowledged the concern the incident would have caused but told parents it was 'confident' there was 'no threat to pupil safety and wellbeing'. In a letter to parents, seen by StokeonTrentLive, the school explained: 'A pupil brought a kitchen knife onto the school premises in a bag. The knife remained in the pupil's bag until it was secured by staff. The situation was managed safely without the need for a lockdown. The CCTV in the corridor has been reviewed and we are confident that there was no threat to pupil safety and wellbeing.'
Police and agencies involved
The school immediately notified the parents of the pupils involved, the police, and relevant agencies, who are now managing the situation. The letter added: 'Please be assured that the safety and wellbeing of all our pupils and staff remain our highest priority. We understand that this incident has caused alarm within the school community and we apologise for the limited communication regarding this matter. However, due to the sensitive nature and the ongoing involvement of external authorities, we were unable to share details until now. Whilst we must respect the confidentiality of the pupil involved, we want to assure you that the academy is treating the incident with the utmost seriousness to ensure the ongoing safety of our pupils.'
