London Couple Sentenced to Six Years for Dog Attack on Child

A couple from north London has been imprisoned after their XL bully-type dog viciously attacked a young boy on two separate occasions, resulting in serious injuries that required surgical intervention.

Perry Driver, 67, and Kim Driver, 58, were sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court on Friday, March 27, 2026, following their guilty pleas to charges related to the dangerous dog and cruelty to a person under 16 years old.

Details of the Aggressive Incidents

The attacks occurred in 2023, when the couple's dog, named Maverick, bit the child, causing significant scarring on his arm and leg. The boy needed surgery on his arm as a result of the injuries sustained during these traumatic events.

In a heartfelt statement read to the court, the victim expressed the ongoing psychological impact, stating, "Every time I have to look at my arm or leg it brings back memories of the incident. I don’t like to have my arm or leg on show at all and I will wear long clothing."

Prosecution's Case and Sentencing

Prosecutor Katrina Charles argued that the Drivers failed to meet Maverick's welfare needs by not feeding him properly and neglecting regular walks, which significantly contributed to the dog's aggressive behavior.

Judge Timothy Godfrey emphasized during sentencing that the XL bully-type breed is known for its often aggressive nature, and the couple did not provide appropriate training or care for their pet. The judge noted that the boy suffered serious injuries from both biting incidents.

The couple was sentenced to six years in prison and received a 12-year ban from having custody of any dog. In court, Kim Driver became emotional, and the couple hugged in the dock upon hearing their fate.

Defense and Remorse

Defense attorney Poppy Cleary contested the allegations regarding improper feeding and lack of walks, stating that the evidence did not support these claims. She added that both defendants, who were of good character, expressed remorse for the incidents.

Despite their expressions of regret, the court found the couple responsible for the attacks and the resulting harm to the child, leading to the substantial prison sentence and custody ban.
