A dangerous driver in Wolverhampton shouted 'tell everyone I love them' as he was being arrested after a police chase that ended with his car crashing into a lamppost. The incident occurred on the evening of 15 February, when officers attempted to stop a vehicle on the A449 in Wolverhampton. The driver, 28-year-old Kieran Smith, failed to stop and led police on a pursuit through residential streets.
Police Chase and Crash
Smith drove at high speeds, ignoring red lights and mounting pavements, before losing control and crashing into a lamppost on the junction of Cannock Road and Lea Road. He then attempted to flee on foot but was quickly detained by officers. During the arrest, Smith shouted, 'Tell everyone I love them,' according to police reports.
No one was injured in the crash, but the lamppost was severely damaged. Smith was subsequently charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, and driving without a license or insurance.
Court Appearance and Sentencing
Smith appeared at Wolverhampton Crown Court on 10 March, where he pleaded guilty to all charges. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison and disqualified from driving for three years. Judge Michael Chambers said Smith's driving was 'appalling' and that he had shown a 'complete disregard for the safety of others.'
According to West Midlands Police, Smith had previous convictions for driving offenses and was already on a suspended sentence at the time of the chase. PC Sarah Jenkins, from the force's traffic unit, said: 'Smith's driving was reckless and dangerous. He put the lives of innocent people at risk, and it is fortunate that no one was seriously injured or killed. His actions were completely unacceptable, and we welcome the sentence handed down by the court.'
