Disqualified Driver Under Influence of Drug Cocktail Causes Fatal Crash
A disqualified driver, high on a dangerous mix of drugs, crashed his Mini Cooper into a tree, resulting in the tragic death of his front-seat passenger, a mother-of-two. Lee Rance, 43, had a cocktail of substances including cocaine in his system when he took the wheel on May 20 last year, leading to catastrophic consequences.
Police Attempt to Stop Vehicle Before Fatal Incident
At approximately 11:30 PM, a British Transport Police officer observed Rance driving at concerning speeds along the A1159 in Southend. The officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, but Rance failed to stop and instead accelerated away. Shortly after, the officer, who did not engage in a pursuit, discovered the wreckage of the Mini after it had collided with a tree.
Passenger Succumbs to Injuries After Hospitalisation
The front-seat passenger, 37-year-old Carly Hicks, was rushed to hospital in critical condition but later died from her injuries. The crash not only claimed her life but also revealed further criminal activity associated with Rance.
Drugs and Firearm Recovered from Vehicle
Following the crash, police recovered drugs, including cocaine and heroin, from the car. Additionally, a firearm bearing Rance's fingerprint was found stashed in a carrier bag behind the driver's seat. A mobile phone linked to Rance was also discovered, containing messages consistent with drug supply activities.
Toxicology Report Reveals Multiple Substances
Tests conducted on Rance confirmed the presence of a cocktail of drugs in his system. These included cocaine, morphine, diazepam, methadone, and prescription medication, highlighting the severe impairment under which he was operating the vehicle.
Court Conviction on Multiple Charges
Rance, of Frobisher Way, Shoeburyness, denied charges of causing death by dangerous driving, possession of a firearm when prohibited, and two counts of possession with intent to supply class A drugs. However, following a trial at Basildon Crown Court, he was convicted on all counts. Sentencing is scheduled for April 30 at the same court.
Family's Heartbreaking Tribute to Victim
Carly Hicks' family described her as a beautiful soul with an infectious smile and distinctive laugh. In an emotional statement, they expressed their profound loss, noting that she was an incredible mother to her two daughters. The family emphasised that Carly's kindness and trust were tragically misplaced, ultimately leading to her premature death.
Police Condemn Driver's Actions
Detective Sergeant Sam Nason of Essex Police condemned Rance's despicable decisions that night, which not only cost Carly her life but also endangered other road users. Nason stated that the guilty verdicts fairly reflect the catastrophic harm caused by Rance's actions and extended thoughts to Carly's grieving family and friends.
Nason also paid tribute to the first responders and ambulance service colleagues who worked tirelessly at the scene in an effort to save Carly's life, acknowledging their dedication during such a distressing incident.
