Dudley Councillors Unite in Demand for Full Investigation into High Street Child Grooming Allegations

Councillors from across the political spectrum in Dudley are urgently calling for a special meeting of the authority to debate shocking media reports of child sexual exploitation linked to high street shops in the borough. This follows a BBC News investigation published on March 19, which included alarming allegations of grooming activities connected to shops in Stourbridge, Dudley, and Brierley Hill.

BBC Investigation Sparks Outrage and Calls for Transparency

The BBC report detailed claims that Dudley Council's Trading Standards officers provided intelligence briefings to a safeguarding group, including West Midlands Police, about children being offered free vapes and alcohol in exchange for sex. These revelations have ignited fury among local politicians, who are now demanding an extraordinary council meeting to uncover who was aware of these allegations and what actions were taken.

Cllr Pete Lowe of the Black Country Party expressed his dismay, stating, "I am appalled at reading the report and the potential that this has been happening in our communities. Our key role as elected members is to safeguard children. The report claims that police, safeguarding, and councils were contacted numerous times about young children being offered drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes... what has been going on?"

Cross-Party Support for Investigation

The demand for an investigation has garnered support from multiple political groups. Cllr Shaun Keasey from the Reform UK group on the council emphasized, "Residents absolutely need and deserve this to be an entirely transparent process." Dudley Labour leader, Cllr Adam Aston, echoed this sentiment, saying, "I echo the call of Dudley councillors from across the political spectrum that it is imperative for a full and thorough investigation to take place with transparent disclosure of the facts."

Dudley Liberal Democrat leader, Cllr Ryan Priest, added his concern, noting, "I am appalled that, as a local councillor, the leader of my group, the first I hear about this is via an article in the press. At what level has this been known and how has this been investigated, escalated, and reported on. We need to ensure our communities are safe."

Council Leader Backs Probe but Questions Meeting Format

Dudley Council leader, Cllr Patrick Harley, has supported calls for an investigation but suggested that a full council hearing might not be the most effective approach. He explained, "I support this move but would prioritize a scrutiny meeting that had a deep dive on this and related issues. Cabinet, group leaders, and all 72 councillors have been briefed over the last few days on all that the council officers know. To have both scrutiny and full council would achieve nothing if we don't have any more facts."

Cllr Harley further mentioned, "I'm hoping officers will have concluded their work within the next week or so and then we can hopefully get to the bottom of this. To date, police, agents on the ground, and council officers have no live cases or historical cases."

Police Response and Ongoing Safeguarding Efforts

According to the BBC, West Midlands Police initially stated they had no evidence to substantiate claims of child sexual abuse linked to shops in Dudley. However, they later revised their statement to affirm they maintain a robust partnership approach to safeguarding in the borough and always act on information received. This highlights the complex nature of the allegations and the need for a thorough review of all available intelligence and actions taken by authorities.

The situation underscores the critical importance of community safety and the responsibility of local government to protect vulnerable children. As the investigation moves forward, residents and officials alike await clarity and accountability to ensure such incidents are prevented in the future.
