The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has enforced rules leading to 1.4 million drivers being taken off the road due to number plate non-compliance. Official DVSA data reveals that a staggering 1.4 million MOT tests are failed each year because of number plate problems.
Breakdown of Number Plate Failures
Figures for Class 4 vehicles—mostly cars and light vans—show 477,914 MOT failure items were linked to the condition or legality of number plates. In 389,375 cases, testers could not read the plates properly. Additionally, 60,451 failures occurred because plates did not meet legal requirements. The most common issue was one or more number plate lights not working, accounting for 513,316 failures.
Driving with non-compliant plates—such as those with incorrect spacing, wrong fonts, or illegally tinted backgrounds—results in failure. Around 1.4 million MOT tests fail annually in the UK because of faulty, obscured, or illegal number plates and poor lighting.
Expert Comments on the Issue
Damon Jowett, Head of Customer, Roadside and Network Services at Green Flag, said: "Many drivers don't realise how strict the rules around number plates are. Something as simple as a faded digit, cracked plastic or a loose fixing can lead to an MOT failure. With more than 1.3 million number plate-related MOT failure items recorded last year, a simple visual check could help drivers avoid unnecessary cost and disruption."
RAC head of policy Simon Williams added: "Given the proliferation of number plate recognition cameras used for various types of enforcement, it simply isn't right that criminals can get away with these offences by easily purchasing illegal ghost plates. Together with the modern motoring menace that is cloned number plates, where blameless drivers have to prove their innocence for motoring offences they didn't commit, it’s apparent these are serious and growing problems that need solutions."
