Two people have been charged after police officers were allegedly assaulted during a pursuit of an e-scooter in Handsworth. The incident began when officers on proactive patrols on Soho Road spotted an e-scooter carrying two people, which was ridden away from them.
A police officer on an electric bike pursued the e-scooter, and the chase ended on Ninevah Road, where a man and a woman were arrested. Two officers were assaulted during the arrests, according to a statement from West Midlands Police.
Charges and Court Appearances
Milika Kaid-Brown, 21, was charged with assaulting an officer and has been released on bail to appear before city magistrates next month. Jaheim Sharp, 22, was charged with assaulting an officer and driving an e-scooter without a licence or insurance. He was remanded in custody to appear before city magistrates today.
Police also recovered several dealer bags of cannabis found nearby after the pursuit. Enquiries into the recovery of the drugs continue, the force said.
Operation Fearless Response
In a statement, police said: "We’ve arrested two people and recovered drugs after our Fearless officers pursued an e-scooter being illegally ridden in Handsworth."
The statement continued: "Officers were carrying out proactive patrols on the Soho Road when the e-scooter carrying two people was ridden away from them. It was pursued by a Fearless officer using one of our electric bikes, and the pursuit came to an end on Ninevah Road, where a man and a woman were arrested and two of our officers were assaulted."
Operation Fearless arrived on the Soho Road and Handsworth triangle earlier this year to tackle the crime that matters most to the communities. Drugs, violence, anti-social behaviour, and the illicit sale of goods from shops are all being targeted by the team.
