Eight serving police officers from the same force have been suspended following allegations of misconduct during an off-duty holiday abroad.
Officers Suspended Pending Investigation
A sergeant, six police constables, and a special constable, all based in Chester-le-Street, Durham, were suspended in October last year. The suspensions came into effect pending a full investigation by Durham Constabulary's professional standards department. The force confirmed the action relates to allegations that the group failed to uphold the expected standards of professional behaviour.
Allegations Stem from Off-Duty Conduct in Spain
The investigation is understood to centre on the officers' conduct while on a joint holiday in Spain, which has been described as "booze-fuelled". Reports suggest the probe also relates to an inappropriate tattoo. A spokesperson for Durham Police stated: "The investigation is ongoing and all eight remain under suspension."
Force Upholds Professional Standards
The case highlights the stringent professional standards expected of police officers, even when they are off-duty. Durham Constabulary has taken decisive action by suspending the officers while its professional standards team conducts a thorough inquiry. No further details about the specific nature of the alleged misbehaviour have been released publicly at this stage.
