Eleven men were stopped and spoken to by police on Birmingham's Soho Road during an operation targeting men seeking out women for sex. One of the men was charged after allegedly refusing to admit he had been seeking out women for paid sex along the Handsworth route, while the other ten accepted community resolutions by agreeing to take part in a rehabilitation scheme designed for men who seek out sex workers.
The operation, carried out by the Operation Fearless Team, took place over several evenings earlier this month. West Midlands Police said the initiative aimed to target men "who exploit sex workers" and to make Soho Road "safer for everyone". A force spokesperson confirmed that officers stopped and spoke to 11 men after using officers to identify those who were seeking out women for sex.
Charges and arrests
One of the men was charged after allegedly refusing to admit he had been seeking out women for paid sex. The ten other men accepted community resolutions, which involve agreeing to attend a rehabilitation scheme for men who seek out sex workers. Police said they could face charges if they fail to attend the programme.
In addition, one man was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and possession of Class A and B drugs. Another man was arrested on suspicion of knife possession and breaching the terms of a sex offender's notification requirements.
Police statement on deterrent impact
Acting Insp Chloe Morgan described the operation as a success, stating: "This was a successful operation which will have had a real deterrent impact on the area." She added: "This is by no means a victimless crime. Women who are involved in this kind of work are exploited and have a number of vulnerabilities. Men who control them are often associated with wider criminality such as violence and drugs, so it's important we send a message out that this activity won't be tolerated."
A force spokesperson said: "Our work to make Soho Road safer for everyone has continued, with an operation targeting men who exploit sex workers." The Operation Fearless Team, which has been working in the Soho Road and Handsworth Triangle area since April, focuses on tackling drugs, anti-social behaviour, and the trade in illicit tobacco and other goods.
