Councillor Majid Mahmood has called for eviction proceedings after travellers moved onto Brook Meadow Public Open Space in Hodge Hill, setting up caravans and vehicles just yards from children's play equipment.
Incident Details
The encampment appeared on Sunday, June 28, with caravans and other vehicles occupying the park near a multi games surface. Images from the site show horses roaming and grazing on the grass. The park also features a children's play area and lies along the Cole Valley Cycle Route.
Official Response
Councillor Mahmood, representing Bromford and Hodge Hill, stated: "Following an email from residents, I have notified the Council about the travellers’ encampment at Brook Meadow POS. I have requested an animal welfare officer attends the site to assess the welfare of the horses, and that the appropriate welfare checks are carried out for those on the site. I have also asked the council to begin the necessary legal process, where appropriate, with a view to securing the site’s eviction in line with the relevant procedures. I will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as I receive them."
Council's Stance
Birmingham City Council has previously stated: "The council is committed to actively protecting its land and will take steps to recover this land where unauthorised encampments encroach upon it." The council has been asked to initiate eviction proceedings and ensure animal welfare checks are conducted.
