Former Firefighter Sentenced to 12 Years for Grooming and Raping Teenager

A sexual predator who groomed and raped a 13-year-old girl after meeting her at a school open day has been jailed for 12 years. Scott Cameron, 41, a former firefighter and father-of-two, exploited the victim's vulnerability, manipulating her into a sexual relationship that culminated in rape in the back of his partner's car.

Grooming Began with Innocent Thank-You Letter

The abuse started when the victim and a friend left a thank-you letter at a fire station, decorated with love hearts and a smiley face, which included her phone number. Cameron used this number to contact her, initially pretending to be another firefighter she admired before revealing his true identity. He then preyed on her, calling her "gorgeous" and demanding inappropriate photographs, including bikini and nude images, with threats to share them if she refused.

Systematic Manipulation and Abuse

Prosecutor Nick Cockrell told Liverpool Crown Court that Cameron built trust with the girl over time, moving communications from a burner phone to his personal device after ensuring she would not tell anyone. They met "six or seven times" in clandestine encounters, often when her mother was at work, with the victim describing losing her virginity to him in the car. The messages exchanged were "intense and frequent" and of a "graphic nature," focusing on her young age and virginity.

In a particularly disturbing twist, when the victim confided in Cameron about being raped by another male, he responded with jealousy rather than support, highlighting his predatory mindset. Cameron initially denied all allegations, even suggesting the victim was harassing him "under the influence of drugs," but later admitted to sexual activity while claiming he thought she was 16, despite evidence to the contrary.

Conviction and Sentencing

Following a trial in October last year, Cameron was found guilty of 10 offences, including six counts of sexual activity with a child. He also pleaded guilty to a separate count of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity from the early 2000s. In sentencing, he received 12 years in prison with an extended six-year licence for the recent offences, plus 12 months for the earlier crime.

Defence lawyer Kate Morley noted Cameron's remorse and his loss of his fire service job, long-term partner, and children, attributing some behavior to mental struggles after his father's death, but emphasized it did not excuse his actions. The judge imposed a sexual harm prevention order, banning him from working with children or vulnerable people, and issued restraining orders against contacting the victims.

This case underscores the severe consequences of grooming and sexual abuse, with Cameron's actions described as a "systematic and sustained" manipulation that exploited a child's trust and innocence.
