Former Journalist Sentenced to Four Years for CS Spray Attacks in Sutton Park
A former journalist has been handed a four-year prison sentence after carrying out a series of terrifying CS spray attacks in a popular Birmingham park. Bradley Baker, aged 33, targeted strangers in broad daylight, leaving victims fearing they would go blind.
Details of the Terrifying Incidents
The attacks occurred on August 14, 2024, in Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield. Baker, who previously worked for BirminghamLive, was cycling around the park after consuming alcohol and drugs when he sprayed multiple strangers directly in the face with CS spray.
Prosecutor Andrew Baker described how the victims were "absolutely terrified" during the unprovoked assaults, with no warning about what was being sprayed into their faces. The substance caused significant irritation and burns, with several victims requiring hospital treatment.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
Baker was convicted of four counts of administering a noxious substance with intent to injure, along with possession of a weapon. During the attacks, he also exposed himself to his victims.
Recorder Caroline Goodwin delivered a stern rebuke during sentencing, stating: "You are someone who can pose a risk and probation indicates your behaviour demonstrates a willingness to engage in both violent and sexual offending."
Criminal History and Psychological Factors
The court heard disturbing details about Baker's background, including previous convictions for child sex offences, which were considered an aggravating factor in this case. Psychiatric reports presented to the court revealed diagnoses of personality disorder, bipolar disorder, and psychotic disorder, all attributed to substance misuse.
Defence barrister Laura Coton argued that there was "no lasting injury or damage" to the victims and noted that Baker was "doing really well" in prison. She mentioned that his parents were providing support and helping to arrange his eventual release.
Impact on Victims and Community Safety
The attacks have raised significant concerns about public safety in Sutton Park, a beloved green space used by families, walkers, and cyclists throughout the year. Victims described the trauma of not knowing what substance had been sprayed in their faces and the genuine fear that they might suffer permanent vision damage.
Local authorities have been urged to review security measures in the park following these disturbing incidents, which occurred near the Toby Carvery restaurant area of the park.
