The devastated family of a man who died days after an assault outside a Leicestershire village pub have described him as a 'devoted family man' and a 'friend to all'.

Tragic details of the Christmas week assault

David Darke, aged 66, was assaulted on Church Street in Appleby Magna on the evening of Saturday, December 21. Leicestershire Police were called to the scene, outside The Crown pub, just before 9.45pm. Officers reported that Mr Darke had been punched.

The attack left the 66-year-old with a serious head injury. He was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham for treatment but sadly died there on Saturday, December 27.

A life remembered: 'He will live on forever in our hearts'

In a moving statement, Mr Darke's heartbroken family celebrated his life and character. They described him as a deeply loved father to three daughters and a proud grandfather to three boys.

"He was a much-loved brother and a dear friend," the family said. "Dave will live on forever in our hearts, minds and souls. He was a strong, active, intelligent and kind person who was a friend to all."

They highlighted his devotion to his family and his passions, stating he was "a devoted family man with a deep passion for life, the outdoors, nature and walking."

The family added: "His life was tragically cut short and he's now reunited with his loving, caring parents. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him."

Ongoing police investigation and appeal

The East Midlands Special Operations Unit has taken the lead in investigating Mr Darke's death. A significant development occurred on December 27.

A 36-year-old man, initially arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and later released on police bail, was re-arrested on suspicion of murder. He remained in police custody as enquiries continued.

Police are continuing to appeal for information from the public. Anyone with details who has not yet come forward is urged to contact the force.
