A dramatic police operation involving a helicopter led to the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of three off-road bikes in Bilston, West Midlands. The incident, which took place on July 17, saw officers from West Midlands Police track two motorbikes riding in convoy, one suspected stolen and lacking registration plates.
Helicopter Support and Initial Arrest
With support from the National Police Air Service, officers brought one of the bikes to a stop on Church Street. A 15-year-old rider was detained at the scene. The second bike, reported stolen the day before, attempted to evade capture by riding the wrong way down a road and onto a footpath before being abandoned. The rider fled on foot but was swiftly arrested.
Charges and Court Appearance
A 25-year-old man was charged with driving while disqualified, driving without due care and attention, taking a vehicle without the owner's consent, failing to stop, and possession of cannabis. He was bailed to appear at Dudley Magistrates' Court on August 27. The 15-year-old was also bailed pending further enquiries.
Third Bike Seized and Destruction
During the same operation, a third off-road bike was seized. All three machines are set to be crushed, removing them from potential future misuse.
Police Statement on Community Safety
Inspector Emma Clark of Bilston and East Park Police said: "This is yet more focused police activity to detain those who ride these bikes in space and spaces they should not be in, and in a manner that we know causes concern for many people. We are getting these bikes off our streets and out of our open spaces so our public places can be enjoyed by everyone, safely and in peace."

Councillor Obaida Ahmed, Wolverhampton Council's cabinet member for health, wellbeing and community, added: "We know the misuse of off-road bikes can cause significant distress to residents and put people at risk, which is why we remain committed to working closely with colleagues from West Midlands Police to tackle the issue and hold those responsible to account. We would also encourage anyone who witnesses offences or has information about offenders to report it to the police, as information from the public plays a vital role in helping the authorities to take action and keep our communities safe."
