Hit-and-run driver injures woman at Birmingham supermarket

A woman was seriously injured after a silver Ford Fiesta crashed into the front of the New Medina Superstore on Witton Road, Aston, around 1.50pm on Friday, July 10. The driver fled the scene, leaving the woman with arm injuries and temporary loss of sensation in her legs.

Incident Details

The supermarket was busy with customers at the time, many of whom had just finished Friday prayers. The impact knocked over rows of fruit and vegetable displays, causing significant damage to the storefront. CCTV footage shows the driver and another male exiting the vehicle and running away, with bystanders shouting “catch him.”

Victim and Response

The victim, a woman in her 30s, was treated at the scene by paramedics and a MERIT trauma doctor before being taken to Midland Metropolitan University Hospital with potentially serious injuries. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “She was treated for potentially serious injuries before being taken to the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.” West Midlands Police confirmed her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Witness Account

Mohammed Hafeez, owner of the New Medina Superstore, said: “I was out but came after 15 or 20 mins. There was a silver Ford Fiesta on top of the pavement and it went into the front of the shop, destroying all the fruits and vegetables which I had to throw away. The lady was in her 30s and her arm was injured badly and she couldn’t feel her legs. We called the ambulance and we put some towels for her to sit on, it was hot.” He noted the area is usually busy after Friday prayers and things could have been much worse.

Police Investigation

West Midlands Police cordoned off the road and are appealing for information. A police statement said: “We were called to a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Witton Road at around 1.50pm yesterday (10 July). A woman was taken to hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening. The driver of the car left the scene and we're carrying out further enquiries to identify and trace them.” On Saturday morning, damaged cars remained at the roadside.
