Investigation Launched After Woman Dies in Police Custody

Independent Investigation Launched Following Death in Police Custody

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has initiated a thorough investigation after a 44-year-old woman from Selly Oak was discovered deceased in a cell at Bloxwich Police Station. The tragic incident occurred on February 3, 2026, with the woman found unresponsive at 2.15pm, just one day after her arrest in Walsall at 6.30pm on February 2.

Details of the Incident and Immediate Response

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and her next of kin have been formally notified. The IOPC announced the launch of its independent investigation at 4.20pm on the same day the body was discovered, underscoring the urgency and seriousness of the case.

IOPC Director of Engagement Derrick Campbell expressed his condolences, stating, "My condolences go to the woman's family and friends." He further elaborated that investigators will meticulously examine the circumstances surrounding the woman's arrest, the level of supervision provided during her custody, and the actions taken by officers and police staff who interacted with her following the arrest on Monday evening.

Scope and Importance of the IOPC Investigation

Campbell emphasised the critical nature of the inquiry, noting, "As a member of the public has died while in the care of police, it's important we conduct a thorough, independent investigation to establish the full circumstances." The investigation team has been dispatched to the scene to preserve and examine evidence, which includes recovering CCTV footage and body-worn video recordings from the officers involved.

This case highlights ongoing concerns about safety and accountability within police custody procedures. The IOPC's involvement aims to ensure transparency and address any potential issues in the handling of detainees, particularly in incidents resulting in fatalities.

The community and authorities await the findings of this investigation, which could lead to significant changes in police protocols and practices to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
