West Midlands Children as Young as 11 Arrested for Murder, Rape, and Robbery

A shocking investigation by BirminghamLive has uncovered that children as young as 11 in the West Midlands have been arrested for the most serious offences, including murder, rape, robbery, and grievous bodily harm. Baby-faced schoolchildren aged 10 have also been detained by police for carrying knives, making threats to kill, and committing sexual assaults.

Youngest Suspects in Police Custody

These represent the youngest individuals taken into police custody in the region on suspicion of such grave crimes since the beginning of last year. In the United Kingdom, the criminal age of responsibility starts at 10, meaning boys and girls can be charged with offences, as it is assumed they understand their actions are wrong and illegal.

The list of suspected crimes, provided by West Midlands Police following a freedom of information request, presents deeply concerning details. Two children, aged 11 and 12, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder. Additionally, an 11-year-old and four 12-year-olds were alleged to have committed rapes, all involving other children under the age of 13.

Robbery and Violent Offences

Another 11 children between the ages of 10 and 12 were identified as prime suspects in robberies, which involve violence or the threat of violence, with several other attempted robberies also recorded. Other serious offences include grievous bodily harm and wounding, highlighting a troubling trend among the youth.

Knife Crime Epidemic Among Children

Most alarmingly, the most common offence young children were suspected of committing was possession of knives. The region's well-documented knife crime epidemic is reflected in these figures, showing how young boys are becoming involved. There were 38 arrests of children aged 12 and under for possession of knives, including at least three 10-year-olds.

Furthermore, four schoolchildren were arrested over possession of firearms, with two aged 11 and two aged 12. In total, there have been 272 arrests of children under 12 in the West Midlands since the start of 2025. However, not all of these resulted in charges; over 100 faced no further action, sometimes due to evidential difficulties, while others have been released under investigation or bailed as detectives continue to build their cases.

Recent Convictions Highlight Severity

These latest figures emerge just weeks after the sentencing of Kian Moulton, who was 14 when he brutally murdered 12-year-old Leo Ross in an unprovoked attack as he walked home from school. In 2024, two 12-year-old boys became some of the youngest in the UK to be convicted of murder after brutally hacking Shawn Seesahai to death in a Wolverhampton park, underscoring the gravity of youth crime in the area.
