Killer Sentenced to Life After M40 Hard Shoulder Discovery
Norbert Maiksner, a 49-year-old Polish national, has been handed a life sentence for the murder of his girlfriend, Frances Obiefuleh, aged 45. The brutal crime occurred at their shared residence in Havant, Hampshire, where Maiksner suffocated Obiefuleh by wrapping tape around her face.
Discovery on the M40
In a chilling turn of events, Maiksner was discovered by a Highways Officer walking along the hard shoulder of the M40 motorway near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, on the morning of April 17 last year. Upon encountering the officer, Maiksner immediately instructed them to contact the police, confessing that he had killed his girlfriend.
Trial and Sentencing Details
The trial proceeded at Portsmouth Crown Court, where jurors convicted Maiksner of murder. Notably, Maiksner did not attend his own trial, which continued in his absence. He received a life sentence with a minimum term of 24 years before parole consideration.
During the proceedings, the court heard that Maiksner told officers he had committed the murder, describing the event as a dream from which he wished to awaken. Prosecutor Paul Cavin KC presented post-mortem evidence indicating that Obiefuleh died from smothering, with additional injuries caused by compression to her neck and chest.
Scratches found on Maiksner's chest and back were likely inflicted by Obiefuleh during her final moments as she struggled to survive the attack, according to Mr. Cavin.
Family Tribute and Impact
Frances Obiefuleh's family released a heartfelt statement, describing her as a kind, intelligent, and resourceful individual. They emphasized her role as a caring and deeply loving mother, sister, aunt, and friend to many.
"Frances was a devoted mother and beautiful in every sense of the word," the family said. "Someone we love has been cruelly taken from us, and it has changed our lives forever. We have lost a truly beautiful soul. Her bright light has been cruelly dimmed, and we are left shaken, heartbroken, and still trying to process the grief and shock of losing Frances."
Police Response and Closure
Detective Sergeant Heather Kenwright expressed relief at the sentencing, stating that Maiksner deserved life behind bars for his heinous and evil actions. She acknowledged the unthinkable suffering caused to Obiefuleh in her last moments and to her family, who must now rebuild their lives without her.
"Whilst no sentence can ever truly bring them justice for the tragic loss of Frances's life, I hope it brings them some semblance of closure to know that Maiksner is now facing the consequences of his abhorrent actions," DS Kenwright added.
