Life Sentence for Violent Bully Who Left Partner to Die After Brutal Attack

Dale Cole, 39, has been locked up for life after being convicted of murdering his vulnerable partner, Lisa Holland, in a horrific case of domestic abuse. The sentencing took place at Stafford Crown Court on Tuesday, March 24, following a trial that revealed a pattern of sustained violence and control.

Graphic Evidence and Delayed Emergency Call

Cole inflicted serious internal injuries on Ms. Holland, 39, after returning from work on October 20, 2022. Prosecutors detailed how he took graphic photographs and videos of her lifeless body as she lay unconscious at the bottom of the stairs. Shockingly, he waited an hour and a half before dialling 999 at 6:23 pm, despite the severity of her condition. Paramedics were unable to save her, and she was pronounced dead at their home in Victoria Crescent, Burton-on-Trent, at 7 pm.

Long History of Abuse and Control

The court heard that Ms. Holland's death was the culmination of a long period of abuse, during which she suffered at least 30 broken ribs in the weeks and months leading up to the murder. A post-mortem examination revealed signs of at least 40 broken ribs in total. Neighbours reported hearing slapping sounds, crying, and repeated arguments, with Ms. Holland often appearing frightened and anxious afterwards. Her relatives had noticed black eyes on multiple occasions, which she blamed on accidents with furniture or their dog.

Text messages between the couple showed Ms. Holland complaining of pain, aching, and being unable to cover her bruises with make-up after Cole had beaten her. On one occasion, Cole told her to "stop going on about it" when she mentioned pain in her head and face.

Financial Exploitation and Coercive Behaviour

Prosecutor Edward Brown KC described Cole as violent, manipulative, and controlling over both Ms. Holland and her finances. Analysis of her bank account found more than 50 deposits from the DWP between January 2019 and October 2022, with 50 payments totalling £35,000 transferred to Cole. References included "debt to society" and "Lisa loves Dale". Cole had previously admitted a charge of controlling or coercive behaviour in an intimate relationship.

Trial and Sentencing Details

Cole was found guilty of murder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent by a jury at Stafford Crown Court on Friday, March 20. During the trial, he admitted punching Ms. Holland four times at the top of the stairs after an altercation, claiming she had hit out at him. He said he then went downstairs, fell asleep, and woke to find her at the bottom of the stairs. Cole admitted giving her black eyes and punching her but denied stamping or kicking her, insisting he never intended serious harm.

However, Mr. Brown told the jury the relationship was "truly abusive" and that Cole beat Ms. Holland as "some kind of punishment, as he saw it, for her drinking". The victim struggled with alcohol dependency, making her more vulnerable.

Cole was jailed for life with a minimum term of 24 years. Senior investigating officer Det Chief Insp Ian Fitzgerald from Staffordshire Police stated: "Cole is a violent, cowardly offender whose sustained abuse and brutality ended in the murder of a vulnerable woman who should have been safe in her own home." He emphasised that Cole showed no remorse and attempted to cover up his actions by claiming Ms. Holland had fallen down the stairs, a story disproven by medical evidence.

Appeal for Victims of Domestic Abuse

In light of this case, authorities are urging anyone experiencing domestic abuse—whether physical, emotional, financial, or coercive—to seek help. Det Chief Insp Fitzgerald added: "We will listen. We will take action. And we will do everything in our power to protect you." The thoughts of the police remain with Ms. Holland's family, who have shown dignity throughout the investigation and trial.
