Dean Romain, 39, of Manchester, has been sentenced to 11 months in prison for performing a U-turn on the M6 motorway in Staffordshire during rush hour. The incident occurred on the southbound carriageway near junction 13 for Stafford at approximately 8am on Monday, 13 July, a time when traffic was heavy.
Details of the Incident
Romain was driving a silver Volkswagen Passat when he executed the highly dangerous maneuver. Police officers observed the U-turn and followed the vehicle, arresting Romain shortly afterward. The vehicle was later recovered by authorities.
Appearing at North Staffordshire Justice Centre on Tuesday, 14 July, Romain pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and driving without insurance. In addition to the prison sentence, he was disqualified from driving for three years and four months upon his release and ordered to pay a surcharge of £187.

Sergeant Richard Kimberley of Staffordshire Police condemned Romain's actions, stating: “Romain is clearly a highly dangerous and reckless driver who selfishly put other motorists at risk during rush hour. I am pleased he has been jailed and handed a lengthy disqualification for his actions. We are determined to keep Staffordshire’s road network safe and will do all we can to bring those who risk public safety before the courts.”
A police spokesperson added: “Romain was driving a silver Volkswagen Passat on the M6 southbound, near junction 13 in Stafford, at around 8am on Monday (13 July) when he was seen doing a U-turn on the carriageway. Officers managed to follow the vehicle and Romain was arrested a short time later. The vehicle has since been recovered.”
