A 53-year-old man has admitted raping a 17-year-old girl in a brutal attack at a popular beauty spot in the Midlands. Jason William Heaton entered guilty pleas to two counts of rape, attempted rape, causing a female aged 13 or over to engage in sexual activity, and kidnap during a hearing at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Monday, 27 July.
Attack at Berryhill Fields
The assault took place at Berryhill Fields, a nature reserve located between Bentilee and Berryhill in north Staffordshire, on the evening of 2 July. The teenager was walking through the reserve at around 7pm when Heaton targeted her, subjecting her to what police described as a “particularly abhorrent attack”.
Staffordshire Police have been investigating the incident since it was reported. Detective Constable Samantha Gales, who led the investigation, praised the victim for her bravery. “This was a particularly abhorrent attack on the survivor, who has shown immense bravery in coming forward and supporting our investigation,” she said.
Strong evidence leads to guilty plea
The force stated that the evidence gathered against Heaton, of Hulme, Stoke-on-Trent, was “strong”, leaving him with “no choice but to admit what he did”. The investigation involved meticulous work to build a watertight case, ensuring that justice could be served swiftly.
Heaton has been remanded in custody ahead of his sentencing hearing, which is scheduled for 30 September. He faces a significant prison term for the multiple serious offences.
